The article about the Yemeni community in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is a powerful reminder of how important it is for schools to recognize and support immigrant and minority students — especially those from communities like the Yemeni Americans. It’s striking (and sobering) that Yemeni students rank among the top newcomer groups in the district, yet until recently their presence wasn’t accurately tracked — a situation that risks invisibility and under‑investment. The fact sheet—and accompanying efforts by the district to hire Arabic‑speaking staff, accommodate religious and cultural practices, and offer translation and counseling — feels like a meaningful step toward equity. But beyond policy changes, what really matters is fostering a school culture where Yemeni students feel seen, respected, and safe: where their language, culture, and identity are acknowledged and validated rather than overlooked. I hope more school districts take note — this kind of inclusion benefits not just Yemeni students, but the entire community by promoting understanding, empathy, and belonging.
